Bulgarian President Georgi Parvanov and Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit stressed the importance of the Nabucco natural gas pipeline project Wednesday during official talks in Sofia.

In particular, the two leaders drew attention to the opportunity of joining Nabucco to the Trans-Mashreq gas pipeline project to ensure deliveries of gas from Egypt through Jordan and Syria to Turkey and on to Europe.

Minister Aboul Gheit stressed on the willingness of Egypt and Middle East countries to boost export of gas to Europe.

Parvanov and Aboul Gheit also discussed the opportunities for improving the economic interaction between their two countries, a topic central to the Egyptian minister's prior talks with Bulgarian PM Boyko Borisov and Foreign Minister Nikolay Mladenov.

"We encourage Bulgarian companies to return to Egypt," stated Aboul Gheit, recalling times when Bulgarian businesses had a better presence in his country.

President Parvanov further praised Egypt's continuous efforts in the Middle East peace process.

The Egyptian top diplomat confirmed that President Hosni Mubarak hopes to visit Bulgaria in the first half of 2011, in answer to his Bulgarian counterpart's invitation.
