A Bulgarian citizen has disappeared in Northern Greece as the torrential rains and the rising level of the Struma River have caused floods in parts of the country not unlike the situation in Bulgaria.

The 35-year-old Bulgarian together with two Greeks tried to cross the Struma River, which springs from the Vitosha Mountain near the Bulgarian capital Sofia and flows through parts of Northern Greece into the Aegean Sea.

The two Greeks managed to grab tree branches, which saved them, but the Bulgarian disappeared into the raging waters of the Struma River, and is considered missing.

The torrential rains caused evacuations of village residents in other parts of Northern Greece, in the region of Ioannina. Mudslides caused the road between Ioannina and the Adriatic port of Igoumenitsa to be closed temporarily.
