Hundreds of disabled Sofia residents were forced to wait in line through the night to be included in 2011 in the social service "Assistant for Independent Living."

The program opened for applications Wednesday, the largest private TV channel bTV reported, showing footage of a long line of blind people, people in wheelchairs and on crutches, hoping to be the first ones to receive some of the limited funding.

Data shows that 20 000 handicap Sofia residents have the right to obtain social assistance from the City Hall.

The Director of the Social Services Department with the City Hall informs that by 2:20 pm, 1 350 applications were received while all those waiting in line in front of social assistance offices across Sofia have been processed by 10:30 am.

The "Assistant for Independent Living" is the only social municipal program in the country, providing individual assistance and personal helpers to people with 90% disability and for children five or older with 50% and over 50% reduced ability for social adaptation.

The 2010 municipal budget for the program was BGN 6 M and is expected to remain the same for 2011.
