Bulgaria joins Wednesday many countries all over the world in marking Worlds Aids Day for the seventh consecutive year.

The national anti-AIDS campaign in Bulgaria is targeting young people. It aims at popularizing safe sexual behavior and tolerant attitude towards people who carry the disease.

"The more informed people are, the more tolerant they will be. This is valid not only for young people, but for everybody in general. Information could help decrease the stigma and discrimination, which are the biggest problems related to HIV and AIDS," Tonka Varleva said in an interview for the Bulgarian National Radio.

She is the director of the HIV/AIDS Control and Prevention Program at the Bulgarian Health Ministry. In her words, more than half of the newly infected people in Bulgaria this year were young people, age 15 to 29.

This year, for the first time Bulgaria will provide fast saliva tests, which are comparative to the blood tests. They will test the most endangered groups – drug users, homosexual and bisexual men, and prisoners.

The European Union has provided additional EUR 1,3 B for the fight against AIDS. According to official data, the number of people infected with AIDS in the world is more than 33 million.
