Sunday marks the second day of a major international philosophy conference in Sofia, Bulgaria with key European philosophers Axel Honneth and Luc Boltanski as keynote speakers.

The conference, under the heading "What Social Criticism Today?" is part of the Sofia Dialogues series organized the Bulgarian foundation Maison des Sciences de l'Homme et de la Soci?t? (House of the Sciences of Man and Society, MSHS), with the help of the Open Society Institute and Trust for Civil Society in Central and Eastern Europe.

The German philosopher Axel Honneth is famous for originally reintroducing the concept of recognition in social theory. Monday he will be awarded a honorary doctorate degree from Sofia University and will give an academic speech entitled "Rethinking Reification". His paper at the conference, presented Sunday morning, was entitled "Market and Morality. An Alternative Analysis of Capitalism."

The French philosopher Luc Boltanski has been challenging well-received ideas in critical theory, and asking for appreciation of the ways social actors are unequally situated in the field of discourse. Saturday he presented a talk on "Pragmatic Sociology and Social Criticism."

The MHSH conference, held over the course of the whole Saturday and Sunday at H?tel Ar?na di Serdika, features a number of other important speakers, among whom Martin Hartmann (Frankfurt), Ljubi?a Mitrovi? (Ni?), Louis Pinto (Paris), Michail Ryklin (Moscow), Stilian Yotov and Boyan Znepolski (Sofia).
