Bulgarian football star and Manchester United player Dimitar Berbatov is among the 55 players shortlisted for the 6th World XI Player Awards of the International Federation of Professional Football Players (FIFPro).
The World XI is considered the symbolic World Team for 2008. A total of 50 000 professional football players from all over the world will vote for their best colleagues.
In the shortlist, the Bulgarian is accompanied by the likes of Lionel Messi, Waine Rooney, Stephen Gerrard, Kaka and Cristiano Ronaldo. Among the 55 stars in the list, there are as many as 10 Spaniards and 9 Brazilians.
Dimitar Berbatov has made an impressive season so far, most prominently displayed in British and international media after his glorious hat-trick against Liverpool on September 19 2010. His fantastic displays were praised even by the most severe critics of his performance during the last season.
The 29-year old Dimitar Berbatov hardly needs to be introduced, since he has been among the world's top players in the recent years. It is remarkable, though, that his first transfer – from the small team of Pirin Blagoevgrad to CSKA Sofia – was in exchange for a couple of footballs.
Some 12 years later, Manchester United bought the Bulgarian for GBP 30.7 M.
The final World XI and the FIFPro World Player of the year will be announced at the Golden Ball award ceremony in Z?rich on January 10 2011.
