Sofia 'College Town' Brawl Leads to 6 Arrests

The police in the Bulgarian capital Sofia have arrested six individuals over the thrashing of 19-year-old college student early Tuesday morning.

Denis Pehlivanov, who was severely beaten in the wee hours of November 23, is listed in critical condition in the Sofia emergency hospital "Pirogov."

One of the detainees, a 20-year-old student, was actually a friend of Denis, police say.

In the latest case of youth violence in Sofia's "Studentski Grad" (College Town) district, the young man was thrashed to death in front of the "Cotton Club" bar, all while police were inside to investigate a theft report. Three others were hurt in the brawl, but they have been released from the hospital.

Police further inform it was Denis, who started the fight by attacking others with a metal pipe. The incident happened after two companies – one of 25 people, celebrating a birthday in the club, and another  - of 7 people, entered into an altercation over Denis stepping on the foot of a college student inside the crowded bar. The argument grew into a mass fight between a total of 15 youth.
