A Madagascar military leader has claimed the army has done a successful coup d'etat in the Indian Ocean island country.

The announcement was made by Colonel Charles Andrianasoavina, who helped current President Andry Rajoelina – a former DJ – to seize the power last year.

The claim came on a day on which a referendum was scheduled, deciding whether to accept or reject a new constitution, which calls for keeping Rajoelina in power long as it takes to organise an election.

Rajoelina has been diplomatically isolated and his position is currently only recognized by a few other countries.

Madagascar has been politically unstable during the last couple of years.
