Bulgarian FM Acclaims Release of Aung San Suu Kyi

The Bulgarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has expressed its great acclaim for the release of Burmese dissident Aung San Suu Kyi after 15 years of house detention.

Foreign minister Nikolay Mladenov has stated he hopes that she now will be able to "participate fully and without restrictions" in her country's political process.

He expressed that Bulgaria is in full solidarity with the right of the people of Myanmar to live in freedom and democracy, and in community with the rest of the world.

Sunday Aung San Suu Kyi gave her first speech after being released, calling her supporters to to give up hopes for the future.

Suu Kyi spoke in front of 5000 members of her National League for Democracy, saying they must continue their fight for democratization. She vowed she was open to debate, ready to "sort out differences" and "speak to the generals", as reported by the BBC.

Leaders across the world also acclaimed her release.

Unlikely general elections were held in junta-ruled Myanmar just a week ago, on November 7, as part of a so-called "roadmap to democracy". The National League for Democracy has nevertheless boycotted the vote.

The government-founded Union Solidarity and Development Party won the elections, which the international community has viewed as unfree and unfair.
