During his working visit to Sofia Saturday, Russian PM Vladimir Putin has requested a discontinuation of Bulgarian production of Russian weapons with expired license.

This has become clear after the Bulgarian Council of Ministers officially published the minutes of the meeting between Putin and Bulgarian PM Boyko Borisov, as had been agreed. The information is circulated by various Bulgarian and Russian media sources.

"I would like to draw attention to the issue of [Bulgarian] production of Russian weapons without a Russian license. I would like you to speed up work to solve this problem. And I would like to add that the production of Soviet weapons without their modernization is a dead-end street," said the Russian PM.

In particular, Bulgaria produces and sells Soviet-era Kalashnikov rifles at the Arsenal factory near Kazanlak. Russia is reported to sell only a small part of the world's total Kalashnikov production, while the larger part of the rest of the production is unlicensed.
