Bulgaria was going to win the Eurovision 2007 contest but failed to do so only because it did not possess the adequate arena to host the competition the following year, according to Bulgarian pop singer Miro.

In 2007 Bulgaria reached its topmost place in the competition with the song "Voda" by Elitsa and Stundzhi, which scored number 5.

According to Miro, who spoke in late-night show Goreshto on Nova TV, Elitsa and Stundzhi were going to get the first prize, but when organizers called the Bulgarian authorities to ask whether they had adequate facilities to host the next edition, the answer was "No", so the song got only the 5th place.

As a matter of fact, Bulgaria does not possess an adequate modern concert hall to host major shows and concerts. The only present facilities are from the communist era and suffer from bad maintenance. A new sports and concert in being built in Sofia and set to be launched in 2011.

Miro, who represented Bulgaria in Eurovision's latest edition (2010), but did not fare well in the contest, made a number of other interesting allegations in the show, which all centered around the notion that Eurovision is a highly politically - rather than musically - motivated competition.

He nevertheless did not view that as a bad thing, but rather as contributing to understanding between nations. "Eurovision is a wonderful form of diplomacy - here you have countries and not performers competing!" said he.

In that light, Miro revealed that in 2007 Elitsa and Studzhi had received massive backing from Bulgarian President Georgi Parvanov, something he himself failed to garner.

Nevertheless, Miro qualified the Bulgarian President as "one very cool statesman."

Miro, officially Miroslav Kostadinov, formerly part of the Karzima duo, is one of the most popular pop singers in Bulgaria, spawning a line of intelligently and sensitively written local hits over the last decade.
