Agriculture Minister, Miroslav Naydenov, officially inaugurated Thursday the country's first ever monument of Bulgarian yogurt, a tribute to the unique Bulgarian product.

The monument is now located at the Inter Expo exhibit hall in Sofia as part of the traditional "World of Yogurt" display. It is dedicated to the discoverer of bacillus bulgaricus in the yogurt, Dr. Stamen Grigorov. The live active culture is named Lactobakterium Bulgaricum Grigoroff.

Grigorov, who had studied natural sciences in Montpelier and medicine in Geneva, isolated the bacteria in 1905, receiving an award from the University of Geneva. He then received many job offers abroad, including Switzerland and Brazil, but declined and returned to his native country to become a district physician in the western town of Tran.

"We must boast the image of Bulgarian yogurt, which made us famous around the globe. It is part of our national heritage, a traditional Bulgarian product, known for its nutritious and healing effects. We also must offer Bulgarian consumers the opportunity to consume daily true yogurt," Naydenov said during the official ceremony.
