Bulgarian archeologists and experts from the National History Museum have discovered a sanctuary older than ancient the Thracian city of Perperikon.

Like Perperikon, the Belintash sanctuary is located in the Rhodoppe Mountains, but at a higher altitude, near the village of Vrata in the vicinity of the town of Asenovgrad.

The location was first explored in 2003. Archeologists are dating the sanctuary, dedicated to Thracian God Sabazius, from the 5th century b.c., making it the oldest one in Europe.

The research in the area was renewed in October, when the Ministry of Culture slated BGN 30 000 for it. These are the first serious digs, after the sanctuary's discovery 7 years ago.

The altar, located on a mountain plateau, is accessible through steps, carved in the rock. Archeologists say it was used for ritual sacrifices. They have also discovered altar fireplaces, some of which are hand-decorated, along with ceramics in the base of the rock, stored under a natural roof.

A necropolis mound has been found about a kilometer away from Belintash, believed to be a tomb from the late bronze period.
