The Bulgarian Automobile Union has proposed changes in the driving courses, including doubling theory time from 40 to 80 hours and decreasing the course price to BGN 350.

The head of the union, Boris Gavrilov, has announced that they are preparing six halls for theoretical education and a 2000 sq.m. polygon in Sofia. He also noted that they are considering bringing back the hours of practice on polygon.

The Bulgarian Automobile Union is planning to implement the changes from the spring of 2011. People will pay BGN 350 and will receive 80 hours of theory, which is twice more than they would receive now, and more than the current 31 hours of practice.

“We want to bring back the practice of teaching young drivers from 20 years ago,” Gavrilov said.

In his words, people’s statements that the money is too little for the education to be enough are groundless and make no sense.

“An instructor has to teach a student not because he would receive a lot of money from him, but in order to make him an equal citizen and an equal driver. He has to gain knowledge and this is the purpose of the driving course,” Gavrilov said.

The idea of the Bulgarian Automobile Union has been supported by its members - 20 driving schools all around the country.

In Gavrilov’s words, currently there are about 3000 driving instructors and 600 driving schools in Bulgaria, while the number of people receiving driver’s license per year is about 100,000.
