Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov scored two goals and made funny jokes in Saturday's charity football match between Bulgarian and Italian politicians.

The match took place in Pescara, Abruzzo region, in order to raise funds for the construction of a new, multifunctional facility in Camarda (L'Aquila) – one of the towns which suffered the most damage during the April 2009 devastating earthquake.

The match ended 2:1 for Bulgaria, with Borisov scoring both goals, the second one from a penalty kick. The goal for the Italian politicians was actually an own goal scored by a member of the Bulgarian team.

"We helped them. They had no other chance to score. But after all that was a charity game," Borisov joked after the end of the game, as cited by BTA.

In his words, sports victories are important in order to dispel Bulgaria's image as the poorest and most corrupt country in Europe.

Borisov pointed out that all expenses for the charity match were assumed by the Italian bank UniCredit and that the Bulgarian government did not spend any money for transportation costs or anything else.

After the match, Borisov met with Bulgarians living in Pescara.
