Sofia Municipality Prepares for Snow Cleaning

About BGN 17 M will be provided for winter cleaning of the Bulgarian capital, Sofia mayor, Yordanka Fandakova, has announced.

On Monday, Fandakova took part in a check of one of the seven cleaning companies, which has 35 snow plows.

She explained that the equipment will be placed at different locations in order to ensure the fast cleaning.

According to the new municipal demands, the companies have to clean the streets with public transport within one hour after the start of the snowfall, or within 30 minutes if the snowfall is heavy.

The contracts with all seven companies envision cleaning of 16,000 acres, nearly 7,000 of which are streets with public transport, 3,500 acres are of public importance and the rest are stops and subways for public transport.

Fandakova also stated that the municipality will not pay for the service if the companies have even 5% failure in cleaning the streets from snow.

She added that BGN 1,5 M were not paid to the companies for last year’s cleaning because of non-filled services.

This year, the companies will be penalized with three times the amount of the service for not cleaned stops for public transport until 7:30 am.

Sofia Deputy Mayor, Maria Boyadzhiyska, stated that the contracts for the districts Izgrev, Slatina, Poduyane, Krasno Selo and Krasna Polyana have not been signed yet.

However, she was confident that they would be signed. She pointed out that companies should be ready with the equipment for the snow cleaning.
