Bulgarian Minister of Defense Networks as EU Mulls Joint Army

The Bulgarian Minister of Defense Anyu Angelov met a number of European counterparts in Thessaloniki at the International Defense and Security Fair.

Angelov held talks with Cypriot counterpart Kostas Papakostas to discuss the developments in the EU Common Security and Defense Policy and the opportunities for standing and structured cooperation of member-states.

Friday after the European Council summit in Brussels Italian PM Silvio Berlusconi had revealed that the upcoming Council in December EU heads of government will discuss the opportunities for joint military forces in order to cut expenses and render them more effective.

According to Berlusconi, as reported by the Bulgarian National Radio, if the EU unites its armies, it would be on a par with the military might of countries such as the USA, Russia and China.

In Thessaloniki, the Bulgarian Minister of Defense has also meet his Hungarian colleague Csaba Hende to discuss the upcoming Hungarian Presidency of the EU in the first half of 2011.

When talking with Serbian Minister of Defense Dragan Sutanovac, Angelov expressed satisfaction with Serbia's request to join the regional multilateral SEEBRIG brigade. After the first joint Bulgarian-Serbian army drill at Shabla, Bulgaria this fall, the two ministers discussed opportunities for more joint practice.
