Stanishev Praises Ashton for EEAS Efforts

Bulgarian Socialist leader Sergey Stanishev, who now chairs the PES Foreign Policy Network, has met with EEAS head Catherine Ashton, praising her on her efforts to make EU foreign policy more transparent.

In his capacity as the chair the Foreign Policy Network of the Party of European Socialists, the former Bulgarian PM (2005-2009) and Bulgarian Socialist Party leader Sergey Stanishev took part Thursday in the Network's second session.

The forum was also attended by EU High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy and head of the EEAS Catherine Ashton.

Stanishev stated that the European External Action Service (EEAS) should have a crucial role in the formation of EU's foreign policy. EU's foreign policy should be based on justice and bravery, in Stanishev' s opinion.

According to him, EEAS head Catherine Ashton has done overall a great job since she took over the position with EEAS's inception at the end of 2009. He emphasized particularly the institutional planning she has carried through.

In her address to the forum Ashton herself emphasized the importance of the Western Balkans as a central aspect in the PES Foreign Policy Network's activities.

The socialist MEPs met with high praise the Obama Administration's efforts concerning the Israel-Palestinian negotiations. They pointed out that EU's foreign policy should also focus more efforts on the task to reach a peaceful solution between the two countries.

The PES Foreign Policy Network was set up in April 2010, with Bulgaria's ex-PM elected as its first chair. The next session is going to take place in Bulgaria in March next year.
