Bulgaria Seeks BGN 1 M over Ohrid Tragedy

The families of the Bulgarian tourists, who died during a boat accident in Macedonia are asking BGN 1 M in compensations.

The information was announced Thursday by the Bulgarian National Radio, BNR, citing Macedonian media.

15 Bulgarian citizens found their death on September 5, 2009, in the sinking of the obsolete "Ilinden" ship in the waters of the Ohrid Lake.

The trial in the case is finally set to start on October 26.

The defendants are the captain of the boat, Sotir Fileski, and the representative of the insurance company "Lloyd," Branko Baic.

Baic's defense council says his client has not been summoned and would not appear in the courtroom.

The Macedonian TV "Alfa" further points out there is a parallel probe in Bulgaria, seeking to charge the Navigation Office in Ohrid, with the latter facing a civil suit.
