Dogs Roam as Attacked Woman Wins Case against Bulgarian Capital

A woman who was attacked by stray dogs in the Bulgarian capital Sofia won her suit filed against the local authorities at the Sofia Administrative Court.

The trial and ongoing complaints by Sofia residents have not done much to relieve the capital from the problem of stray dogs, according to observations made by Novinite.com (Sofia News Agency) on a daily basis.

The 76-year-old lady was attacked by four stray dogs on a quiet morning last summer when leaving the home of a friend in Sofia's Slavia neighborhood. She was severely bitten all over the body and had to be rescued by neighbors.

Monday the Sofia Administrative Court mandated that Sofia Municipality has to pay her a BGN 5000 indemnity.

To an outside observer, this might seem a meager amount, but is a considerable legal win for Bulgaria.

After the incident, the organization hired by the Municipality to manage stray animals had removed all dogs from the area.

On-site checks conducted by Novinite.com (Sofia News Agency) show dozens of stray dogs roaming the quaint old Slavia neighborhood in south-west Sofia, some of them exhibiting aggressive behavior, especially during the dark hours.

Slavia is just one example, with higher stray dog concentrations per human resident reported by authorities for other neighborhoods.
