Bulgaria's Federation of Scientific-Engineering Unions Turns 125

President Georgi Parvanov has awarded the Federation of Scientific-Engineering Unions in Bulgaria on the occasion of the 125th birthday of the organization.

Parvanov presented the Chair of the Federation of Scientific-Engineering Unions in Bulgaria (FNTS), Prof. Vasil Skurev, with an honorary sign for the contribution of the organization to the foundation of contemporary science in Bulgaria.

In his personal capacity Professor Skurev received Bulgaria's highest state order "Stara Planina, I Degree".

"The Bulgarian state is in much debt to the science sector in the country as far as the development of our research and development potential is concerned as a number of governments in the recent years have had a nihilistic attitude towards science. I believe in the future of your organization," President Parvanov stated.

Prof. Skurev said the Federation has had a member, who had been the head of state, but had never received an award from the head of state until today.

The Federation of the Scientific-Engineering Unions in Bulgaria /FNTS/ is a non-government, non-political, creative professional non-profit association. Its members are national and territorial associations of engineers, economists, scientists, agricultural specialists, inventors, technicians, students and other specialists in the sphere of science, technique and economy. It has more than 15 000 individual members.

FNTS is a co-founder and a member of the World Federation of the Engineering Organizations (WFEO/FMOI), a member of the the European Federation of National Engineering Associations (FEANI), and a member of the the /CO.P.I.C.E.E./, Global Compact, European Young Engeneers.

FNTS incorporates 19 national scientific-technical unions /NTS/ and 33 territorial NTS together with their structures - associations, clubs of technique, etc.

It was first founded on March 26, 1885, as the first Bulgarian technical association, which was instituted in the Danube city of Ruse.

In February 1893 the Bulgarian Engineering -Architectural Association /BIAD/ was instituted in the city of Sofia. In 1937, it was reorganized into Union of the Bulgarian Engineers and Architects /SBIA/.

In 1949, the Union of the Bulgarian Engineers and Architects and six other technical organizations were incorporated into scientific- technical unions. In 1965 two independent organization were differentiated - Scientific -Technical Unions /NTS/ and the Union of the Architects in Bulgaria /SAB/.

In March 1989, NTS was given a new name - Federation of the Scientific -Technical Associations in Bulgaria /FNTD/. In May, 1992 at the IXth special congress FNTD was given a new name - Federation of the Scientific -Technical Unions in Bulgaria /FNTS/.
