Italy has re-opened its Honorary Consulate in the Southern Bulgarian city of Plovdiv after a brief period of inactivity.

The new office of the Honorary Consulate is located in the second floor of the Business Center Evropa, 26, Petko Karavelov Street.

The ceremony of inauguration was attended by the Italian Ambassador Stefano Benazzo, the Deputy Mayor of Plovdiv, Alexander Dolev, the new Consul Giuseppe De Francesco and by a number of Bulgarian and Italian citizens working and living in Plovdiv.

His Excellency, Italian Ambassador Benazzo underlined the important role played by the Italian community in Plovdiv where many Italian companies placed their headquarters.

In the Ambassador's opinion the opening of a Consulate in the second city of the country clearly reflects the excellent relations between the two countries.

Culture and entrepreneurship have the potential to be two of the main fields of cooperation between Italy and the city and the region of Plovdiv.

The Italian consul in Plovdiv, De Francesco has vowed a strong commitment to the development of the Plovdiv Region, and the role of the Italian community in Plovdiv, a city he defined as "the cultural capital of Bulgaria".

Giuseppe De Francesco has worked in Bulgaria since 2004 for "Rigoni di Asiago", an Italian company that deals with fruit-growing and production of organic jams; is fluent in Bulgarian.

After the ceremony, the Italian delegation visited the brand new Archaeological Museum of Plovdiv, a tangible sign of the Roman roots of the city.
