For the first time a Bulgarian citizen has received an organ from a foreign donor, the Bulgarian Health Ministry has announced.

A 37-year-old Bulgarian woman has gotten transplanted kidney from a 34-year-old donor from Munich, Germany through Eurotransplant International Foundation.

The plane with the cooler, carrying the organ, left the airport in Munich Thursday night. After arriving to Sofia, it was immediately transferred to the hospital and transplanted to the woman.

According to the Bulgarian Health Ministry, the tests for finding the most suitable recipient have been carried out in parallel with the flight.

Eurotransplant has given the kidney as a result of the good cooperation with the Bulgarian Agency for Transplantation.

This year, Bulgaria gave a liver and a lung to patients in Germany and Austria because there have not been suitable matches among the Bulgarian citizens. The coordination has been conducted by Eurotransplant.

In 2010, Bulgaria has performed 31 kidney transplantations from deceased donors, 12 liver and five heart transplantations. In the recent months, there have been four donors and 11 transplantation operations.
