The Deputy Chair of the Rakitovo Town Hall, Severin Klashnov, known by the nickname Charlie, has died from a knife wound, Darik radio reports Thursday.

The information was confirmed by the police in the regional center – the city of Pazardzhik in southern Bulgaria.

Klashnov has been attacked Wednesday night by a group of 10 people. He was stabbed in the back and later died in the hospital. The police are still on the lookout for the killer and say the incident was triggered by an argument over a stolen cell phone.

Local elections are scheduled Saturday in the nearby village of Kostandovo, but the authorities deny the murder is political and has anything to do with the elections.

Darik radio cites own sources saying the municipal representative has also been a well-known drug dealer in the area and the murder has been gang-related while witnesses of the brawl have said it was triggered by attempts of illegal vote buying.
