Bulgarian rangers guarding the NATO/ISAF airfield in Kandahar, Afghanistan, have prevented three armed men from penetrating the military base.

The three men came close to the fence at about 10:30 pm local time on Tuesday. The Bulgarian Defense Ministry has not specified whether the men belonged to the Taliban insurgents.

As a result of the reaction of the Bulgarian rangers, the armed persons withdrew without using their weapons.

The incident occurred about two hours after an attack with a single missile on the airbase that did not cause any casualties.

Four Bulgarian rangers were wounded in February 2010, in a rocket attacked on the Kandahar airfield, three of them seriously.

Bulgaria has 600 troops stationed in Afghanistan as part of the NATO-led International Security Assistance forced. About half of those are in Kandahar, the rest are in Kabul, while Bulgaria also has medical staff in the Helmand province.
