A crash between a minibus and a truck south of the Polish capital, Warsaw left 18 people dead, BBC reports, citing local police.

The accident occurred at daybreak Tuesday in thick fog. Sixteen people were confirmed dead at the scene while two died later at the hospital.

Polish police inform the Volkswagen Transporter minivan was overcrowded with seasonal workers,

All casualties were people traveling on the bus. The truck driver sustained light injuries.

Excessive speed and poor weather conditions are deemed the most likely cause for the crash. Two air ambulances were unable to land at the crash site because of the heavy fog.

Poland's Interior Minister Jerzy Miller already visited the site of the crash.
