The Regional Prosecutor's Office in Bulgaria's second largest city of Plovdiv is currently conducting 36 individual probes in the nearby villages of Markovo and Belashtitsa.

The probe stems from recent pictures of upscale properties taken from a helicopter by employees of the National Revenue Agency (NRA).

The two villages have been known for some time as the "Bulgarian Beverly Hills" over sprawling mansions with pools, golf and tennis courts.

The Plovdiv Prosecutor's Office spokesperson says the 36 people under investigation have properties and assets way over the country's standards and the probe aims at finding out if there is evidence of tax crimes or their lack thereof.

According to the spokesperson, the above said people own real estate all over the country, not only in the Plovdiv suburbs and these properties are also under investigation.

The information used in the probe comes from NRA and the State Agency for National Security (DANS).

In addition to Plovdiv, upscale real estate was filmed on camera from above in 6 affluent Sofia suburbs and on the banks of the Ivaylovgrad dam in southern Bulgaria.
