Kosovo President Fatmir Sejdiu resigned after the constitutional court ruled that he could not keep a party post while in office.

"I presented my resignation for the post of Kosovo President today," Sejdiu said Monday, as The Times reported.

The 58-year-old former law professor was elected President for the second time in 2008 but remained a leader of the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK), which is the second largest party and a coalition partner in PM Hashim Thaci's government.

"I was convinced that keeping the function of the President of the Democratic League of Kosovo without exercising it did not violate the constitution, the court had a different opinion and I respect the ruling," Sejdiu said.

Although the Kosovo President is elected by the Parliament and has a mainly ceremonial role, local analysts believe that the resignation could destabilize the fragile political scene before the talks between Kosovo and Serbia.
