The trips of Bulgarians abroad in August have been 380 000, which is 30% less than August of last year, the National Statistics Institute announced Monday.

Meanwhile, the number of foreigners visiting Bulgaria was on the rise – 1.6 million trips – up 11%, which is mostly attributed to vacation travel during the summer season.

There was also a similar trend in June and July.

In August, Bulgarians increased their trips only to Turkey (5.3%), Cyprus (3.4%) and Portugal (0.3%). The first two are the most preferred destinations for beach vacations while Portugal is one of the European locations increasingly attracting more and more interest on the part of Bulgarian travelers.

Greece recorded the biggest drop of Bulgarian trips abroad in August - 59% down compared to August 2009, but it remains the most visited country by Bulgarians despite the continuous trend of a reduction of about 40% each month since the beginning of the year.

Among visits of foreigners to Bulgaria in August, Russians register the highest increase – 87 000 visits or 30% up year on year.

Germany continues to hold the major share of the foreign tourists market with 244 000 trips in August and 1.1% increased compared to one year ago, followed by the Romanians with 192 000 trips – a 7.3% increase.

NSI data shows that the number of visitors from the UK was up nearly 3% in August while the number of those from the Scandinavian countries was up 7% on yearly basis.
