EC Audit Results for Bulgaria Stats Revealed End of 2010

The Eurostat investigative mission in Bulgaria, which was postponed from the spring, had concluded last week, but the results would be revealed at the end of the year.

The news was reported Saturday by the Director of National Statistics Institute, (NSI), Mariana Kotseva.

Eurostat is the statistical office of the EU and its probe was initially scheduled for March, but was delayed over the Greek budget deficit crisis.

In June, EU Economy Commissioner Olli Rehn, stated Bulgaria could become the first country to be probed by Eurostat over suspicions about the statistics methodology used, triggered by the updates in the budget and in its deficit.

Kotseva reiterated Wednesday before the Bulgarian National TV, BNT, the Eurostat checkup was regular and technical and the procedure mandates that no one involved makes comments while only the official report, which does not have a publication deadline, can be subject to discussions.

"Four countries have been visited by Eurostat investigative missions since the beginning of the year and no report has been published as of now. Most likely, all will be issued together at the end of the year. We do not have any reasons for alarm," the NSI Director reassured.
