PM to Bulgarian Diaspora in NYC: You Should Be Coming Back

Prime Minister Boyko Borisov has told the Bulgarian Diaspora in New York City that the reforms of his government should be making Bulgaria a better place to live.

Borisov, who is on a week-long trip to the US for a UN meetings, met with members of the Bulgarian community in New York on Monday.

"As we know from our experience in Chicago, we should be very careful what we are saying," declared the PM at the start of his address, joking with the effects of his meeting with the Bulgarian diaspora in Chicago in February 2009 when he was still the Mayor of Sofia.

Back then, Borisov told the Bulgarian immigrants that the country was left with "bad human material" such as pensioners and ethnic minorities; he subsequently sought to clarify that he meant something along the lines of "bad labor resources."

"Bulgaria is already a much more peaceful and safe place to live in," the PM told the Bulgarian diaspora arguing that his government had achieved substantial progress in the fight against corruption and organized crime.

"Our other successes will follow suit, and you will be able to return to Bulgaria after that. I guarantee that in 5-6 years we will turn Bulgarian into an average EU country," he said boasting that he had received only positive assessments for the work of his government from international leaders.

Borisov further pointed out that his government is working together with Poland and Hungary for the inclusion of Bulgaria into the US Visa Waiver Program. He argued that once Bulgaria joins the Schengen Agreement – most likely in 2011 – the American visas for Bulgarian citizens should become obsolete.

"While I am here in New York all heads of American police and intelligence services will come to meet up with me informally," he announced.
