Enlargement Commissioner Stefan Fuele has stated that the time has come for the EU to consider seriously Serbia’s application for accession.

Fuele visited Belgrade on Friday meeting with Serbian President Boris Tadic and Prime Minister Mirko Cvetkovic as well as the Ministers of Interior, Ivica Dacic; of Foreign Affairs, Vuk Jeremic; and of Justice, Snezana Malovic.

The Commissioner, as cited by BTA, has welcomed the new impetus in Serbia’s relations with the EU brought about by the former’s agreement to tone down its rigorous opposition to Kosovo’s independence by softening the language of a draft resolution on its former province that it submitted to the UN General Assembly.

The change was achieved under heavy EU diplomatic pressure and was hailed by EU High Representative for foreign and security policy, Catherine Ashton; it is supposed to become a first step in establishing a dialogue between Serbia and Kosovo, even though Belgrade has explicitly made it clear it is not going to recognize the independence of the latter.

Serbia submitted formally its EU membership application in December 2009 but its bid has not been approved yet, and it does not enjoy the status of a candidate country.

EU Enlargement Commissioner Fuele made his comment about the Union having to consider seriously the Serbian bid during his talks with President Tadic, the Tanjug agency said.
