Sofia Imposes Stricter Monitoring of Illegal Driving

The Sofia City Hall and the traffic police are launching a trial camera monitoring in an attempt to eliminate the problem with drivers who park illegally on public transportation stops.

A camera will be mounted on a moving tram car to take pictures of the violators and if the experiment proves successful, more will be installed on different public transportation vehicles, the Bulgarian daily “24 Chassa” (24 Hours) informs.

In addition, a police patrol car with a camera will monitor drivers illegally using the bus-designated lanes on the “Tsarigradsko Shosse” boulevard, which is the main capital thoroughfare.

The traffic police further say they already receive the signal from the recently installed information system that monitors congestions at main streets and boulevards, adding the 52 police patrols, which were removed over the summer when traffic is lighter, will be reinstated. They will monitor major intersections from 7 am to 9 am and from 5 pm to 7 pm.

The difficulties traffic police are encountering stem from the fact that the staff numbers have not been changed in 20 years while the number of cars in Sofia increased from 100 000 to 850 000 with anywhere between 50 and 100 incidents daily.
