Singer George Michael has been sentenced to 8 weeks in jail for crashing his car while driving under the influence of drugs.

Michael also lost his driver's license for five years and was fined GBP 1,250, the BBC has reported.

The 47-year-old singer was arrested on July 4 after he crashed his car into a building in north London and was released on bail.

He was accused of cannabis possession and driving under the influence of drugs and pleaded guilty on both charges.

According to the BBC, Michael will serve four weeks in prison, with the rest of his sentence spent out on license under the supervision of the probation service.

This is not the singer's first drugs scandal. In 2007, he was sentenced to 100 hours of community service and was banned from driving for two years after he admitted he was driving under the influence of drugs.

In 2008, George Michael officially apologized to his fans after he was arrested for possession of drugs and promised to "sort himself out".

The British singer achieved popularity in the 1980s, when he formed the pop duo Wham! and released the song "Careless whisper".
