Severe clashes have erupted between Serbs and ethnic Albanians in Kosovska Mitrovica, the divided town of in northern Kosovo.

The violence broked out after last night Turkey stole the victory from Serbia in the semi final of the world basketball championship in Istanbul.

Excited by Turkey's win, a group of Albanians tried to cross the bridge separating the two ethnic groups in the town but was stopped by Serbis who started hurling stones at them. What followed was a 20-minute fight, including even machine gun shots.

A French gendarmerie officer was wounded in the fighting as the EU police forces interfered.
