The opposition Socialist Party has reacted with criticism to comments by Prime Minister Boyko Borisov about the uselessness of some Bulgarian embassies and involvement of their staff with private business.

In an almost immediate statement provided to the BGNES agency, the Foreign Policy Council of the Bulgarian Socialist Party defines as "unacceptable" and "damaging" the Prime Minister's comments, in which he justified the apparently planned shutting of a number of Bulgarian diplomatic missions with the argument that many members of the diplomatic corps did not do their job properly and served their private interests abroad.

"These statements on part of the head of the Bulgarian government made in principle, without specific names and the proper evidence damage the prestige of the Bulgarian diplomats as a whole and practically shatter the legitimacy of the Bulgarian diplomatic corps before our partners," declared the Socialist Party.

The Socialist foreign policy experts demand that the PM should be respectful to the diplomatic corps, and that he should provide specific facts about anybody who might be involved in murky activities, without destroying the reputation of all Bulgarian diplomats.

"The Bulgarian diplomatic corps needs development – but the realization of the reforms that are characteristic for the ruling GERB party, namely, the three stages of slander, budget cuts, and appointment of faithful but incompetent people – will have long-term ramifications for Bulgaria's presence on the international stage," conclude the Socialists.
