Bulgaria's opposition Socialist Party (BSP) will ask the Chief Prosecutor to probe how the budget surplus of the National Health Insurance Fund (NZOK) is used.

The statement was made for the media Wednesday by the Member of the Parliament and former Interior Minister, Mihail Mikov. It came on the heels of the parliamentary majority rejecting the left wing's proposal to establish an inquiry commission to look at how much of the NZOK surplus has been spent since the beginning of the year, who ordered the expenses and what it has been used for.

Mikov informed the ruling, center-right Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria (GERB) party was the only political fraction that opposed the commission's establishment, adding the reason is GERB's desire to conceal the truth about how NZOK funds were wasted.

Mikov reiterated the Prosecutor's Office will be involved and pointed out the Doctors' Union is undertaking similar actions.

MP, Yanaki Stoilov, also from BSP, further said the funds were most likely abused since the majority does not want to respond to any related questions, and insisted Finance Minister, Simeon Djankov, offers explanations where he will find the much needed money for health care.
