Bulgaria, Macedonia Vow Cross-Border Cooperation

Bulgaria's Minister on Regional Development and Macedonia's Minister of Local Self-Government will sign a memorandum on understanding in the execution of a cross-border cooperation program between the two countries.

Bulgaria's Rosen Plevneliev and Macedonia's Musa Xhaferi will sign the memorandum on Tuesday.

The program for cross-border cooperation has been approved by the European Commission and will be funded by the Instrument for pre-accession assistance (IPA) and by public funds from the state budgets of both countries.

The budget needed will be more than EUR 14 M. The money will be spent on implementing projects in two Bulgarian regions, Kyustendil and Blagoevgrad, and in three regions in Macedonia, Northeast, East and Southeast.

Priorities under the program would be the economic development, social cohesion and improving the quality of life.

The memorandum will point out the roles of the institutions in the program's management and their authorities. The systems for control and cash flows will also be described.
