94% of Bulgarians See National Economy as Bad - Poll

95% of Bulgarians assessed as bad the state of the national economy and the employment, according to a poll conducted by Eurobarometer. File Photo

A staggering three fourths of all Bulgarians (68%) believe the financial state of their household has made a turn for the worse, according to data published by Eurobarometer, the office studying the public opinion in the EU.

More than half of polled Bulgarians (53%) assess their personal situation as bad, compared to the average 34% and 30% in the EU.

On the other hand side, 64% of EU citizens (only 29% in Bulgaria) see the finances in their household as being in good shape. 52% of Europeans state the situation at work is good compared to 34% of Bulgarians.

The poll has been conducted in May, at the height of the crisis, but has been published in August. It was done by TNS BBSS among 1 000 Bulgarians and a total of 26 641 people across the EU.

94% - 95% of Bulgarians assessed as bad the state of the national economy and the employment, compared to 77% and 83% average in the 27 EU Member States.

Every fourth Bulgarian expects more hardship in household finances by May 20110, but this is still down from the 36% in the fall of 2009.

Bulgarians are more optimistic about EU economy – 42% believe it is good, compared to the 22% EU average. Expectations for the next 12 months also differ - in Bulgaria 39% say the EU economy would improve and 6% believe it would go down globally, compared to the average 23% and 30% respectively in the 27 Member States.

To the question is there a need to up the State budget deficit in the conditions of crisis in order to create new jobs, every third Bulgarian responds affirmatively and 22% are against while in Germany 52% oppose the move. In the EU half say they are ready to lower their living standard to guarantee the lives of the future generation (43% in Bulgaria.)
