Serbia’s President has announced that his country is ready to negotiate and reach a consensus with the EU on the draft resolution regarding Kosovo, sent by Serbia to the UN.

Serbia has vowed never to recognize the independence of its former province, which unilaterally declared independence in 2008.

At the end of July, Serbia tabled a draft resolution to the UN General Assembly regarding Kosovo, to which the U.S., UK and France staged bitter opposition. The draft resolution was expected to be voted in September.

“Serbian authorities will visit Brussels in the next days in order to discuss potential changes to the draft resolution, so that it could become acceptable by Serbia and by the western countries,” the Serbian President Boris Tadic said Sunday.

He has stated that soon the opportunity for achieving a consensus on the draft resolution “so that it is respondent to Serbia’s national interests and it also fits the western countries”, in Tadic’s words, will be discussed in Brussels and Washington.

However, he has reiterated his country’s vows to never recognize Kosovo’s independence.

“This is a red line we will never cross,” Tadic said.

His statement came days after Germany’s Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle warned that Serbia should not hope for EU membership if it fails to change its stance on the independence of Kosovo.

So far, Kosovo’s independence has been recognized by 69 countries, including the United States and 22 out of the 27 EU member states.
