A meeting of women speakers of Parliament from the EU was hosted by Speaker of the Bulgarian Parliament Tsetska Tsacheva Friday in Varna.

The meeting, under the heading of "New Spaces in European Intercultural Dialogue", was held in the framework of the informal club of women speakers of EU Parliaments. It brought together the Bulgarian Speaker of Parliament and counterparts Barabara Prammer (Austria), Ene Ergma (Estonia) and Ásta Jóhannesdóttir (Iceland).

The women speakers celebrated the instant rich access to information and cultural values that lets European citizens create their own spaces for intercultural dialogue. They emphasized the positive influence of digital media, social networks and virtual information resources such as open encyclopedias, internet museums and libraries.

They also emphasized the contribution to dialogue and cultural exchange of the free movement of people within the European Union.

The four women speakers stated that those developments need consistent institutional and policy support and underscored the role that national parliaments can play as institutions representative of Europe’s citizens.

Women parliamentarians are in an especially good position to contribute being especially engaged in the areas of spirituality and education, which are key to Europe’s humanist ideal, says the final message of the meeting.

The four women speakers of parliament are set to meet with Bulgarian PM Boyko Borisov.
