Bulgarian Police to Check Meat Products for Violations

The Bulgarian Agriculture Minister Miroslav Naydenov has announced the beginning of a new police operation, which will check whether meat producers use raw materials intended for disposal.

The operation has begun on Wednesday morning. The checks have been performed by the Bulgarian Unit for Combating Organized Crime and the State Veterinary Public Health Control Directorate.

The Bulgarian PM Boyko Borisov has also expressed his content with the new operation.

“I would like to greet ministers Tsvetan Tsvetanov and Miroslav Naydenov for the synchronized operation for prevention of production of mean with materials intended for disposal. This really is one good collaborative operation,” Borisov said.

The Agriculture Minister has explained that the operation was carried out in connection to the Bulgarian state standard for meat.

“We were working on an information about imported cuttings from sausages that instead of being disposed were processed by some dishonest Bulgarian producers and placed on the market again. In this way, the producers put the lives of people at risk,” Naydenov said.

He added that the operation, the police have seized 130 tons of sausages that were intended for disposal. The experts have also found more than 100 tons of raw materials in the city of Pleven, more than 25 tons in Pazardzhik, about 800 kg in Sofia, 850 kf in the town of Breznik and 1,5 tons in the town of Parvomai.

“The seized materials will be destroyed and the companies will be penalized severely,” Naydenov said.

The minister ha pointed out that the operation was carried out in order to prevent violations conencted to the implementation of the Bulgarian state standard for meat, called “Stara Planina”, which was introduced in Bulgaria in August.
