The Bulgarian government received a letter of praise by US Assistant Secretary of State for International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs David T. Johnson for its efforts in effective law enforcement.

“It is evident that the achievements of your government are leading to major changes in Bulgaria's law enforcement institutions ,” says the letter addressed to Bulgarian PM Boyko Borisov.

Johnson further thanked about Bulgaria's cooperation during his June visit to Sofia, when Bulgarian authorities shared their plans for legislative and judicial reforms.

“Bulgaria has proven itself as an effective partner in our joint efforts in preventing drug trafficking, ensuring border security, fighting money laundering and human trafficking,” states the US Assistant Secretary of State.

Johnson calls for intensifying the cooperation between Bulgaria and the USA in the field and vows staunch US support in entrenching the rule of law in Bulgaria and making it “a model for the region.”

During his June visit, the US official had backed the Bulgarian government's legislative proposals for amending the Criminal Code and the Criminal Procedure Code, and for creating so-called “specialized courts” or “mafia tribunals.”
