The Australian Liberal Party has a marginal lead in general election exit polls, but neither of the two main rivals is likely to win the 76 seats needed for an outright majority.

According to BBC, ABC Australia is predicting 73 seats for the opposition coalition of Tony Abbott, and 72 for ruling Labor party of Prime Minister Julia Gillard, 1 for the Greens and 4 independents. 76 seats are needed for an outright victory.

The general elections are considered the tightest in the country for decades. Australia last had a hung Parliament in 1940.
