Bulgarian Man Busted for Offering Hefty Bribe

A man from the Bulgarian city of Stara Zagora has been arrested for offering a bribe of BGN 100 000 to police officers who found more packs of cigarettes without an excise band in his car.

Around 9:00 pm on Tuesday the mini bus of a 31-year-old Bulgarian man stopped on the side of the road. According to the police, the man has been given a signal by the car in front of him that there was a police car further down the road.

Police officers from the Bulgarian city of Kazanlak searched the stopped car and found around 6265 cartons of cigarettes without excise bands.

When the policemen arrested the man, he offered to give them the BGN 14-15 000 he was carrying with him. After the officers turned the offer down, the man raised the bribe to BGN 50 000 he claimed he had at home. The policemen's rejection was followed by the final bribe of BGN 100 000.

After searching his home, the police have seized 1350 more cartons of cigarettes”LM” without excise bands. The man and his accomplices have been detained for 24 hours.

The 31-year-old has already been convicted for participation of international channel for drug trafficking. In a collaborative operation between the Bulgarian and the Turkish police, in 2003 the man was arrested in Turkey with several dozen kilograms of amphetamine and was released in 2008.
