Bulgarian Capital Sofia Remains Focal Point for Business

Bulgaria's largest businesses with highest sales revenues and the most employees are in or are being established in the capital Sofia, according to a study of the Bulgarian Industrial Association.

The study of the state and development of the Bulgarian business by sectors and regions in 2008 has been financed by the EU operational program “Human Resources.”

In 2008, the largest number of enterprises has been registered in the region of Sofia City - 73 000 or 24%, followed by the region of second largest city of Plovdiv – 29 000 or 10% and the region of the Black Sea capital Varna – 25 000.

By net sales revenues the ranking is: Sofia City first with 49%, followed by the region of the other Black Sea city of Burgas with 8%, Varna – 7% and Sofia region, outside the city limits – 3%.

In 2008, Sofia City was once again the leader in the number of employed in the private business – 756 000, Plovdiv region had 208 000 and Varna region – 168 000.

The service sector provided the most jobs in the country – about one third and had the strongest foreign participation – 43%.
