The Bulgarian National Legal Aid Bureau has warned that attorneys will stop providing free legal protection to clients because the state funding has been spent.

“The budget for this year for the Bureau has been spent. A few days ago, the State Gazette published a decision of the cabinet, stating that the budget for the National Legal Aid Bureau has been decreased from BGN 6 M to BGN 5 M,” the chair of the bureau, Vasya Ilieva, said Monday.

According to her, the refusal of whole bar associations to provide legal services will lead to blocking of the judiciary in some regions in Bulgaria.

Ilieva has also explained that since the changes in the Criminal Procedure Code came into force, 14 bar associations in the country have received requests for reserve defenders.
