The Bulgarian city of Kavarna defeated New York City and will be host of the World Half Marathon Championship in 2012.

The decision has been made during the second day of the meetings of the IAAF (International Association of Athletics Federations) Council in Kiev, Ukraine.

The Council has stated that Kavarna has all the necessary logistic resources and that it currently hosts the Kavarna International Marathon.

IAAF has announced that the race course has already been designed. It will be located in the heart of the city and it will consist of 4 loops of 5 km, plus 1 loop of 1,0975 km.

The mayor of Kavarna, Tsonko Tsonev, has stated that Kavarna has won the voting with complete unanimity.

During the presentation of its candidature in Kiev, the Bulgarian delegation had to answer questions by Sergey Bubka, president of the National Olympic Council of Ukraine and Senior Vice President of IAAF, and Sebastian Coe, who is chair of the London Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games in 2012 and IAAF Vice President.

Additional recognition for the choice of Bulgaria’s Kavarna as the host is the fact that in 2012 IAAF will celebrate its 100th anniversary.
