The much-advertised project for a modern tourist center at the Ancient Thracian city Perperikon in Southern Bulgaria has stalled.

The EUR 2.45 M project kicked off in June 2009 but since then it has gone as far as digging a 10-meter deep crater which is unsecured and poses a real danger for tourists visiting the unique Ancient Thrace rock complex, alarmed Socialist Party MP Dimcho Mihalevski as cited by BNR.

Mihalevski believes that Perperikon is the only tourist major tourist site in Bulgaria where visitors enjoy no safety rules and protection, and are exposed to danger.

The MP claims Finance Minister Simeon Djankov has blocked the funds for the construction of the tourist center at Perperikon. The project was initially approved by the Monuments of Culture Institute but was subsequently stopped by it after its experts expressed reservations.
