The Bulgarian Industrial Association (BIA) has reported that there have been a severe decrease in the number of engineers and doctors in the country.
“The country is seriously threatened, especially in the innovations sector where the shortage of engineers is huge. The condition of the health system is also alarming. There is a deficit of doctors and other medical staff,” states the BIA report on the situation of the workforce on a national, sector and regional level in Bulgaria.
BIA has concluded that the lack of qualified workforce endangers whole sectors. Also, it has been established that there is no objective and current data for the demand on the labor market in the country.
According to the report, the businesses need to participate in the development of the specific education programs, in order to achieve a compliance between the qualification of the work force and the actual demands on the labor market.
The Bulgarian Industrial Association has also established that in some enterprises, the system for support and development of the competences of the employees works on all levels, while in others – only up to the mid-level management.
The BIA report also includes suggestions for amendments to the current legislation in the education field in Bulgaria.
One of the suggestions is for an update every two years of the list of professions, which should be advised with the specialized ministries and the employers organizations.
The other suggestions is for creation of a system, independent from the educational organizations, which should evaluate the competences and the conditions for the implementation of a system for certifying and transferring the acquired competences.
